Smithfield is the county seat of Johnston County, and one of the oldest towns in North Carolina. Founded in 1777, Smithfield has an interesting history that still is reflected in some of our lovely older neighborhoods, our revitalized downtown business district, our Town Commons along the Neuse River, and in our renowned Johnston County Heritage Center.

Our community has grown to more than 12,000 residents and is located in the center of Johnston County – a county with a population approaching 150,000. Raleigh, our dymanic state capital, is only 28 miles away, and we're just two hours from North Carolina’s beaches and four hours from the mountains.
